Fun Pumpkin Facts
Fact 1: Pumpkins are actually a fruit
Most people lump pumpkins in with vegetables, but botanically speaking, they’re a fruit. Why? Because they develop from the flower of the plant and contain seeds inside — just like tomatoes, cucumbers, and melons. So the next time someone asks if you want fruit for dessert, technically pumpkin pie counts!
Fact 2: How pumpkins took over Halloween
The Halloween jack-o’-lantern tradition actually started in Ireland, where people carved scary faces into turnips and potatoes to ward off evil spirits. When Irish immigrants arrived in America, they discovered that pumpkins were bigger, easier to carve, and way more fun — and that’s how the pumpkin became the star of Halloween.
Fact 3: The world’s biggest pumpkin
The largest pumpkin ever recorded tipped the scales at over 2,700 pounds — heavier than a small car! Imagine the carving potential on that thing. You’d need a ladder just to reach the top, and probably a forklift to move it. Not exactly porch-friendly, lol.
Fact 4: Pumpkins come in all shapes and colors
While bright orange pumpkins are the classic, they’re not the only option. Pumpkins can be white, green, yellow, blue, and even striped. Some varieties are small enough to fit in your hand, while others can grow wider than a dining table. That means when you’re coloring your pages, you don’t have to stick with orange – go wild with pink, teal, or rainbow stripes if you want!
Fact 5: Pumpkins have been around for thousands of years
Pumpkins aren’t just a modern fall obsession. They’ve been grown in North America for more than 5,000 years, and Native Americans used them as an important food source. They roasted pumpkin flesh, dried strips for storage, and even used the seeds as medicine. So while pumpkin spice lattes are new, people have been enjoying pumpkins for millennia.
Fact 6: Pumpkin flowers are edible
Pumpkin plants grow big, bright yellow blossoms, and you can actually eat them! They’re often stuffed, fried, or tossed into salads in different cuisines. So technically, you could have pumpkin on your plate before the pumpkin itself even grows.
Fact 7: Pumpkins are 90% water
It’s true. These hefty gourds are mostly water. No wonder they feel so heavy when you’re hauling them from the patch! The high water content also explains why pumpkin puree makes such smooth pies and soups. It also means pumpkins are surprisingly low in calories, making them a nutritious addition to both sweet and savory dishes.
Fact 8: Illinois is the pumpkin capital of the world
If you’ve ever eaten canned pumpkin, chances are it came from Illinois. The state grows more pumpkins than anywhere else, and the town of Morton even calls itself the Pumpkin Capital of the World. Each year, Morton hosts a Pumpkin Festival that draws thousands of visitors and celebrates all things pumpkin, rom pie-eating contests to pumpkin-themed parades.
Fact 9: Pumpkins have their own festival
From pumpkin chucking contests, where people catapult pumpkins through the air, to giant pumpkin regattas, where racers paddle across lakes inside hollowed-out gourds, fall festivals celebrate this fruit in wild and wonderful ways. People don’t just harvest pumpkins, they honor them with passion, creativity, and a whole lot of laughter.
Fact 10: Pumpkin seeds have a nickname
They’re often called pepitas, a word borrowed from Mexican Spanish that means little seeds of squash. These green gems are packed with protein, fiber, and healthy fats, making them a crunchy, nutritious snack. Roast them with salt for a savory bite or toss them in cinnamon sugar for a sweet twist. However you season them, pepitas are proof that pumpkins are delicious down to the last seed.
